Museu do Homem do Nordeste is a Brazilian museum located in the city of Recife. Founded in 1979, it was created from the collections of the former Sugar Museum, the Anthropology Museum and the Museum of Popular Art. As part of the Joaquim Nabuco Foundation Documentation Institute, its museological and museographic conception was inspired by the concept of regional museum, conceived by sociologist-anthropologist Gilberto Freyre.
The museum's collection is characterized by the variety and heterogeneity of its pieces: both exquisite - belonging to the families of the planters, as well as the porcelain collections and objects used by traditional families of the region; as simple objects - used in the daily life of the Brazilian Northeastern and that are part of their formation, cultural heritage of the Indian, Portuguese and African.
Part of the collection reveals a Northeast prior to the discovery of Brazil and shows the culture of the first inhabitants of the region, such as the straw work produced by the fulniô Indians, from Pernambuco, and feathery objects from the Kaapores, from Maranhão. Another part reveals aspects of northeastern colonial life, a portrait of sugarcane culture: mills, sugarcane cultivation utensils and a collection of brandy.
The museum exhibits typical forms of local architecture, such as the grand house of the Senhor de Ingenio and the simple house of mud and utensils that represent the socio-cultural manifestations present in the Northeast, such as ceramic folk art, Carnival feast and handicrafts. they represent religious cults with all their syncretism.
