After the Christian Reconquest, it was built in 1251 by the Archbishop of Braga D. João Viegas. Later it was delivered to the Order of St. James.
In 1577 it became the seat of the episcopal seat of the Diocese of Algarve, having only a few years later (1596) been sacked and burned by the English troops of the Count of Essex. Rebuilt afterwards, the earthquakes of 1722 and 1755 motivated yet other works. (The unfinished steeple marks the troubled life of the building.)
In the interior, the carved and organ ensembles stand out, while on the outside it is worth noting the excellent view over the city and the ria, which is possible from the top of the bell tower.
The Sé Cathedral of Faro, also known as Igreja da Sé or Church of Santa Maria, is a''notável'' building of Faro located in the Largo da Sé.
Of the initial traces, the tower of the frontispiece and the ogival portal, the lateral chapels, the baroque organ and a mannerist altarpiece in carving are still more recent works.
