Ciò che rimane del castello di Faro, fa parte di una struttura difensiva della città, che deve avere origini romane e successivamente rinforzato dagli arabi. Il castello sembra essere stato costruito, dopo la Reconquista cristiana della penisola, sull'Alcáçova di origine musulmana.
Nel 1596, Faro fu attaccato dalle forze inglesi, saccheggiato e bruciato, e dovette essere ricostruito per diversi anni, e già nel XVII secolo, più opere adattarono il castello e le mura della città per l'uso di artiglieria.
Nel 18 ° secolo, il castello fu la sede del Reggimento di artiglieria del Regno dell'Algarve e alla fine del XIX secolo, fu affittato ad una società che lo trasformò in una fabbrica di alcolici.
Le modifiche apportate, per funzionare come una fabbrica, hanno notevolmente adulterato il castello, che è stato anche vittima dell'apertura di una strada attraverso le mura, l'attuale Rua do Castelo.
