The planning of this Theater began on May 1, 1916. After several meetings, a Committee was created for the construction of the Theater, with several personalities linked to Estremoz, namely Dr. Marques Crespo, Dr. José Rosado da Fonseca, the Mr. Carlos Frederico Luna and Mr. José Maria Reynolds Graça Zagalo.
The land of implantation of this property was donated by Mr. João Reynolds. It was situated in a street (now Avenida 25 de Abril) that had been "conquered" to the wall seiscentista a few years ago, and was a zone where the then town of Estremoz expanded with certain speed.
When the land was taken, the plan of the property was executed by Ernesto da Maia. The works in turn are due to Manuel da Silva who carried out the contract of carpentry, advertising panels, etc. The magnificent plaster modeling, the work of António Martins Esteves and the decorative paintings, came out of the hands of a painter from Portalegre, Benvindo Ceia. The first electric lighting was the work of José Luís Vergas da Rocha.
The inauguration took place on July 22, 1922, with the presence of the famous Portuguese artist, Amélia Rey Colaço. There were 816 shareholders. Later, the Municipality took over this jewel of the Portuguese Theater.

It was named after the Alentejo "Bernardim Ribeiro", in honor of this sixteenth-century poet, who wrote so well about his love for his cousin Aonia, supposedly the Estremocense D. Joana Tavares Zagalo, who died at the Convent of the Poor Clares of Estremoz .
