In 1370, D. Fernando, granted to the Claras nuns, their baths and their palace, located in the Street of Elvas, these, in turn, only in 1389 they were constituted in form of community. The convent was then built by Queen Leonor de Teles, who kept it for years.
The cloister is Fernandino and is said to be the only one in the country.
Currently, this convent retains its grandeur, this time, as a Municipal Library.
