According to legend, two navigators in danger will have made a promise in the high seas to build a church in the first place of the land of Portugal that sighted the sea. The legend also states that the founder brought with him from India a small image of Our Lady in ivory, an image which, after his death, the friars venerated as a relic, until, to save it from the gale of 1834, one of them hid it under the habit and went to ask a lady to pick her up.
Founded in 1631 by Pero da Silva (later viceroy of India), the Convent of Our Lady of Desterro, of Manueline architecture, is today in Ruins, surrounded by trees, with a magnificent panorama on Monchique. part of its great charm and beauty.
