The convent was founded in 1448, according to the authorization of Pope Nicholas V, in the place where there was a chapel to Our Lady of the Star.
The Convento de Nossa Senhora da Estrela is located in the parish of Santa Maria de Marvão, Marvão, Portalegre district.
According to legend, the image of Our Lady was hidden by Dom Rodrigo, the last king of the Visigoths, in 711, when the Arab invasion was discovered, when the village of Marvão was liberated from Moslem rule. Mary is called "Dawn of Salvation".
