In a dominant position on the highest knoll of the region, the castle originally housed in its walls the village that, developing, expanded by the slope to the North. It is said that in this castle Vasco da Gama finalized the plans for his trip to India.
The monument features irregular triangular plant. The cloth of the wall facing North, was originally torn by a door, now disappeared, denominated like Door of Évora. The access is currently made by the so-called Porta da Vila, Porta de Santarém or Porta Nova, to the North, flanked by the so-called Clock Tower, square plan, with a broken arch door.
The Castle of Montemor-o-Novo, covering the walls and the properties that are inside them, is classified as a national monument.
