Largest representative of northeastern popular music, Luiz Gonzaga decisively interfered in the trajectory of Brazilian music by introducing the rhythms of the sertão and northeast to the national scene - tunes, xotes, shamans, baiões, xaxados, marchinhas, emboladas.
By rediscovering his musical roots, he helped to shape the northeastern identity in Brazil's imagination, giving the accordion of waltzes and tangos, from the 1940s onwards, a new musicality. Then, as an accordion, the instrument acquired a new personality.
In his obstinate search for country essence, Luiz Gonzaga found in the archives of memory the musical instruments to compose a different orchestration, with the accent of his land, creating the first trio of accordion, zabumba and triangle.
In the clothing of the cangaceiros and cowboys he found his aesthetic personality.
Its influence cannot be measured.
It is the musical and imagetic translation of the northeastern soul itself definitely inscribed in the Brazilian scene.
LUIZ GONZAGA MEMORIAL
The Luiz Gonzaga Memorial (MLG) is a cultural equipment of the Recife City Hall, whose main objective is to preserve and disseminate Luiz Gonzaga's greatest legacy, his musical work, and all that surrounds it, an intangible heritage ensemble that revolutionized music in Brazil. from the 40s and 50s of the twentieth century, and contributed decisively to the formation of the notion of northeasternity in the Brazilian cultural scene.
MLG is a memory and research center that offers its casual visitors, researchers and tourists not only information from its physical collection and expographic project, but also aims to be a recipient and diffuser of the knowledge produced about the King's work. Baião, establishing links and agreements with related institutions, using information technology resources with a dynamic and purposeful profile.
The current collection of the MLG was constituted with the acquisition of the collection of Mávio Holanda, by Recife City Hall, consisting of rare 78 rpm discs, Long Plays, CDs, photos, prints, scrapbooks, videos and audio files in MP3 format. It is a unique collection of MLG, the set of documents provided for replication by Parque Aza Branca, built by Mestre do Araripe in his native torrent in the city of Exu - photos, sheet music and scrapbook.
Conscious that the educational task is the responsibility of every institution that holds a community's heritage, and that education is the best way to perpetuate cultural traditions, MLG also proposes courses, lectures and similar activities within the universe of your reference.
