Livraria Lello, also known as Livraria Lello & Irmão or Livraria Chardron, is located in the Historical Center of the city of Porto. It is a bookstore with an extraordinary historical and architectural value.
Livraria Lello, originated in the International Bookstore of Ernesto Chardron, founded in 1869 at Rua dos Clérigos.
In 1894, and after several sales and acquisitions, the bookstore arrives in the hands of the Lello family. The Lello brothers did not take long to architect a new space for their bookstore and it was then that, on January 13, 1906, Livello Lello was born, precisely as we know it, at the beginning of Rua das Carmelitas.
The opening of the Lello Bookstore was a highlight of 20th century Porto cultural life. In addition to all journalistic coverage, which also extended to Brazilian newspapers, large literary figures from Porto were present.
Let us turn back one hundred years to an era of immediate communication and in which, therefore, the Book and the written press assumed the leading role in the cultural life of the city, defining the tendencies and engines of the great discussions of the twentieth century.
Add to that the absolutely innovative style of the building as well as the fact that it was the city's first concrete building. A true luxury to the eyes of the nineteenth century, a charm that continues to this day.
