The Latin America Memorial is a cultural, political and leisure center, opened on March 18, 1989 in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. The architectural ensemble, designed by Oscar Niemeyer, is a monument to the cultural, political, economic and social integration of Latin America, situated on an area of 84,482 square meters in the Barra Funda neighborhood. His cultural project was developed by anthropologist Darcy Ribeiro. It is a foundation of state public law, with financial and administrative autonomy, linked to the Secretary of State for Culture.
The complex consists of several buildings arranged over two areas joined by a walkway, which total 25,210 square meters of built area: the Hall of Acts, the Latin American Library, the Study Center, the Marta Traba Gallery, the Creativity Pavilion, the Simón Bolívar Auditorium (which suffered a fire on the afternoon of November 29, 2013), the Congressional Annex and the Latin American Parliament building. In Civic Square is the concrete sculpture, also by Niemeyer, depicting an open hand, standing upright, with the map of Latin America painted in red on the palm.
The memorial has a permanent collection of works of art, displayed along the esplanade and indoors, and has a Latin American folk art documentation center. The library has about 30,000 volumes, as well as a section of music and images. The complex promotes exhibitions, lectures, debates, video sessions, theater, music and dance shows.2 It maintains the Brazilian Center for Latin American Studies, an organization that fosters academic research on Latin American subjects. Regularly publishes the magazine Our America and various books. It served as headquarters for the Latin American Parliament between 1989 and 2007 (currently located in Panama City).
