The Lagoa Comprida dam is located on the Lagoa river. The dam was designed in 1910. Its construction began in the summer of 1912. In 1960, it was understood that an elevation of 3 meters was justified, passing the retention level to the current quota of 1600 m, last work in the summers of 1964, 1965 and 1966, making it possible to store 14 million cubic meters of water.
The Lagoa Comprida is the best known and largest of the lagoons of the upper massif of the Serra da Estrela. Constructed from a natural lagoon, it is the main water reservoir of the Serra da Estrela.
On the northern slope of the lagoon one observes one of the most interesting erratic blocks of the Serra da Estrela. These granite blocks were transported by the glaciers and abandoned when melting and retreating from the ice.
This was an old glacier with a kilometer in length. Taking advantage of the cova, began in 1912 the construction of the dam. In 1914 it had a height of six meters and in 1934 it reached 15 meters. At present, since 1965, it has a height of 28 meters. It is a gravity-type dam, formed by three arches of granite masonry with 1200 meters of development. The reservoir has a capacity of about 12 million m3 of water, and floods an area of 800,000 m2.
In this lagoon two tunnels flow: the Covão do Meio, with 2354 meters that diverts water from the slopes of the Planalto da Torre and the Covão dos Conchos with 1519 meters that diverts the waters of Ribeira das Naves.
