The Memory Museum Association of Jaçanã - AMMJ began its activities on December 30, 1983, as a result of the efforts of Mr. Sylvio Bittencourt (currently Chairman of the Board of Executive Officers) through the bylaws and duly recorded in the 1st Notary of Titles and Documents under no. 85.298, CNPJ 56.579.527 / 0001-77 and registration with the Ministry of Culture under No. 35.001.334 / 87-52.
Initially using the garage facilities of his residence in the neighborhood of Jaçanã, in 1985, he moved to a rented office on Avenida Abílio Pedro Ramos, returning to his foundation until 1990. Later, after his wanderings around the neighborhood, the Mr. Sylvio came across a property of the São Paulo State Treasury, an area that was in a state of neglect. Taking advantage of this opportunity, the land was claimed for installation of the museum headquarters by means of a petition, which after analysis and appreciation by the Attorney, authorized the use of that space indefinitely.
After publication in the Official Gazette, assistance was sought from Companhia Metropolitana de São Paulo - Metrô, which donated a warehouse (used during the subway works as workers' accommodation) for the installation of the new headquarters, located at Rua São Luiz Gonzaga , near Comendador Alberto de Souza Square, where the old Cantareira train station was located.
At this time, Mr. Sylvio had a small collection of the history of the neighborhood and went looking for more objects, newspapers and testimonials from traditional and illustrious families who had in their relatives and ancestors, true explorers from Guapira to Jaçanã. Through donations from neighborhood residents such as the Mesquita family, the Mazzei family, the Barbosa family, the Lito family, the Laet family, among others, as well as the Department of Geriatrics D. Pedro II (Asylum) of Santa Casa de Misericórdia de São Paulo, from the Hospital de Lázaros (today São Luiz Gonzaga), Allian Metallurgical Industry, studios of the Maristela Film Company, former Archbishop D. Paulo Evaristo Arns, Catholic Churches such as Santa Teresinha and São Benedito, expanded the AMMJ collection.
The museum's mission is to preserve, defend and communicate the cultural heritage of the Jaçanã neighborhood, a place that has its history linked to the Cantareira train symbol and Adoniran Barbosa's song “The Train of the Eleven”, as this song became the first historical heritage of the neighborhood, contributing to make it known worldwide.
Today, Mr. Sylvio's struggle is to seek help from people and / or companies that help AMMJ to carry out its expansion projects not only for its collection, but also for the adequacy of its precarious physical space.
