According to Túlio Espanca, this village had the primitive name of Aldeia da Igreja. It was founded in the same place where a Roman villa was established, being today the most important Roman vestige of the municipality of Estremoz.
The parochial church was commendation of the Order of Avis and had ecclesiastical visitation in 1534.

At present it presents architectural characteristics common to the seventeenth century, although the chancel reveals an older moth. On the front there are some polychrome tiles that are similarly seventeenth-century, just as in the interior, at the base of the nave. It also has an altar of relevant artistic interest, with a gold-toned altarpiece from the end of the 18th century, in the rococo style.
