The current building will have been built on an earlier 16th century Hermitage, which, due to the earthquake of 1755 and consequent destruction of the Church of Santiago, gained a lot of importance and was small for so many faithful. Thus, it was restored and enlarged, concluding the works in 1834. As early as 1960 it suffered a great fire, where much of its rich heritage was lost.
Its plant is longitudinal of single nave, standing out its enormous dome, that is already the maximum symbol of the building.
Located next to the Castle of Castro Marim, in the Algarve region, the Church of Our Lady of the Martyrs, is one of the symbols of the beautiful village of Castro Marim.
The Church has in its interior important images of the XVI and XVIII centuries, standing out the one of the archangel Saint Gabriel, the one of Our Lady of the Incarnation and the Martyrs and the one of Santa Luzia.
