Located in the village of Cacela Velha, it was a castle at the time of Muslim domination.
In the 16th century, already in ruins, it was rebuilt by order of D. João III or D. Sebastião, and there is no certainty as to which of the two monarchs was really interested in the rebuilding of the defensive structure.
It is known that the latter personally inspected the works in 1573.
The Fortress suffered several vicissitudes in the following centuries. Reports of 1617 state that the wall was ruined on the cliff side. In 1750, the Fortress was ruined and nearly destroyed with the 1755 Earthquake.
The current structure is due to D. Rodrigo de Noronha, who ordered its reconstruction, extending the works from 1770 to 1794. It has trapezoidal plan, with bulwarks at the protruding angles, and guard booths.
In 1897, it was occupied by the GNR Fiscal Brigade, and even today the buildings of the terraplano are used by that security force, which prevents tourist visits to the interior of the monument.
From the broad border to Fortaleza, you can see to the east, the final stretch of Ria Formosa, which extends to a few hundred meters from Manta Rota, the bay of Monte Gordo and, further afield, in Spain, the areas of Isla Canela. and Isla Cristina.
