The Convent of St. Francis is part of a Catholic architectural complex, which includes the Church of Our Lady of the Snows and the Chapel of St. Roque.
Its construction began in 1585, with a project of the Friar Francisco dos Santos, but was partially destroyed by the Dutch in the year 1631 and rebuilt still in the seventeenth century. In front of the convent there is a cruise worked on sandstone removed from the reef.
The cloister and the sacristy are famous for the series of Portuguese tile panels with diverse scenes. In the church, in the sacristy and in the chapel, the rich work on the ceiling, in wood carvings, with caissons containing eighteenth-century paintings is striking. The monastery also has a library with a precious collection of rare works, and in it was installed the first public library of Pernambuco.
The ensemble was included in the list of monuments of the Historic Center of Olinda, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
